"Soul Mates" International Harvester "Cornbinder" & Navy YTM

This peaceful Pacific Northwest scene depicts a 50"s vintage International Harvester "Cornbinder" tow truck, basking in the warm late afternoon light alongside a 1940's steel-hulled Navy YTM tugboat (yard tugboat medium) that's been converted to a commercial harbor tug. Both have a reputation for being solid, hard workers and carry the scars to prove it: but right now they're taking a well deserved rest and are awaiting the clearing of a passing rainstorm.

"Working Up Steam" New York Central railroad tug

The wooden tugboats of the New York Central Railway System commonly known as "Boot Heel" steam tugboats (because of the shape of their wheelhouses) are shown here at their Weehawken facility on the North Hudson. These 1930's vintage tugboats were expressly designed to transfer railroad cars from one side of the New York Harbor to the other on large barges known as car floats. Characterized by their tall wheelhouses with lots of windows, these tugs operated around the clock in three 8 hour shifts and were affectionately known as "lunch pail boats". This type of railroad tug was built from the late 1800's and some operated well into the 1960's.
